Original, refurbished, aftermarket or Apple Service Pack: which part to choose
When we replace a display or battery, we offer up to three part options. They differ in origin, price and what the device says about the part in Settings. iPhone comes first, where the differences are biggest, then iPad, Mac and Apple Watch.
iPhone
iPhone shows where its parts come from in Settings › General › About, in the Parts & Service section.
Premium-quality aftermarket part
A new part from a manufacturer other than Apple. We choose the best available option: displays for ProMotion models support 120 Hz, and batteries have the same chemistry and capacity as the original.
- Display: iPhone marks it in Settings as an unknown part.
- Battery on iPhone 12 to 15 and SE (3rd generation): we configure the battery after the replacement. iPhone does not report an unverified battery, it shows the battery health, and the service history lists it as “Used”.
- Battery on iPhone XS to 11: iPhone marks it as an unknown part in Settings. Battery health is shown as usual.
Original display, refurbished
The original Apple panel with new glass. iPhone may show an unknown part in Settings for this one too: there is no message only when the display comes with its paired proximity sensor, and that is not always possible.

Apple Service Pack
A new genuine part straight from Apple. After calibration in Repair Assistant, iPhone shows it as a genuine part. For iPhone we offer it from iPhone 12 and for iPhone SE (3rd generation).
Can it be done with no message at all?
Yes, for a surcharge. We move the chip from your original display to the new one, aftermarket or refurbished. iPhone then treats the display as the original and shows no message. This works only if the chip on the original display is not damaged.Does True Tone work after a display replacement?
Yes. Since iOS 18, True Tone works with an aftermarket display too.iPad
Newer iPads have the same Parts & Service History section in Settings, but it checks only some parts: the display and the Face ID camera on iPad Pro with M4 and later, and the Touch ID button on iPad Air (M2 and later), iPad mini (A17 Pro) and iPad (A16). It does not check the battery on any iPad.
- Display: we either replace the whole display with an original refurbished one (the original Apple panel with new glass), or repair your own display by replacing its glass.
- Apple Pencil: on iPad Pro (2018 and later), iPad Air 4 and 5 and iPad mini 6 the display is paired with that specific iPad at the factory. After replacing the whole display, even with an original one, Apple Pencil may draw slightly wavy diagonal lines. Only repairing your own display makes sure Apple Pencil keeps working, but that repair does not always succeed. For the newest iPads (Pro M4 and M5, Air M2 and later, mini A17 Pro) it is not yet known whether a display replacement affects Apple Pencil.
- Battery: aftermarket, with the same capacity as the original.
- Apple Service Pack: a new genuine part from Apple; after calibration, Face ID and Touch ID work as they did before the repair.
MacBook
Macs with Apple silicon running macOS Tahoe 26 or later have a Parts & Service section in System Settings. On MacBook Air and Pro it tracks the logic board, the Touch ID board and, on M5 models, the lid angle sensor. It tracks the display only on MacBook Neo and the battery on no Mac. Intel Macs do not have this section.
- Display: on a MacBook the whole lid is replaced. Depending on what our supplier has available, the lid is aftermarket, original from another MacBook, or original refurbished.
- Battery: aftermarket, with the same capacity as the original.
- Apple Service Pack: a new genuine part from Apple, only for Macs with Apple silicon. Touch ID works after the replacement because we calibrate the part through Apple. For some MacBook Pro models Apple supplies the genuine battery only with the whole top case including the keyboard, which is why this repair costs more.
Apple Watch
Apple Watch has neither a parts section nor Repair Assistant.
- Battery: aftermarket, with the same capacity as the original.
- Apple Service Pack: a new genuine battery from Apple.
What an unknown part means
In iOS 26 the part is listed as “Unknown”, in earlier versions as “Unknown Part”. The device is telling you that it cannot verify the part as genuine. It works normally, but the record stays in Settings and may lower the price when you sell or trade in the device. Details from Apple
